Many professionals and leaders expect progress to happen naturally. They believe that the passage of time, the accumulation of experience, or simply the years in a position guarantee personal and professional evolution.
I’m sorry to tell you that it doesn’t work that way. Growth is not an automatic process.
John Maxwell, one of the world’s leading figures in leadership, brilliantly summarized this in the first law of his book, The 15 invaluable laws of growth: The law of intentionality. As Maxwell himself states:
“Personal growth doesn’t happen on its own. Nobody improves by accident.”
Although Maxwell formulated this principle with personal development in mind, the reality is that intentionality is the true engine of success in any area of life.
THE TRAP OF ASSUMPTION
The main obstacle I encounter in consulting and mentoring sessions is what Maxwell calls “the trap of assumption”: assuming that we will grow automatically just by being busy.
When you leave your life on autopilot, you’re not managing your own destiny; you’re responding to someone else’s. The difference between people who reach their full potential and those who fall short lies in a single decision: moving from expectation to intention.
APPLYING INTENTIONALITY TO ALL AREAS
If you analyze the most important pillars of your life, you’ll see that a lack of intentionality is the root of MOST STAGNATION:
- Leadership and Career: Professional relevance doesn’t sustain itself. It requires a deliberate plan of continuous learning, improvement of management skills (soft skills), and conscious management of your personal brand. If you don’t set a clear course, the inertia of daily life will decide for you.
- Personal Relationships: Trust and affection don’t last by inertia. Romantic, family, and friendship relationships require dedicated quality time, active listening, and mindful presence.
- Health and Well-being: No healthy habit sticks “just because the opportunity arises.” It demands planning, discipline, and explicit time blocks in your schedule for physical activity and rest.
3 STEPS TO ACTIVATE INTENTIONALITY TODAY
- Abandon the “moment gap”: Don’t wait until the beginning of next month, next quarter, or for your workload to decrease to start working on yourself. The perfect moment doesn’t exist; the time to act is now.
- Make an honest assessment: Evaluate your key areas (career, relationships, health, finances). In which areas are you operating with a clear plan, and in which are you simply reacting?
- Schedule your priorities: What isn’t on the schedule doesn’t exist. Allocate blocked and unchangeable time for your training, your health, and your personal projects with the same rigor you use to schedule a meeting with your most important client.
As Maxwell reminded us:
“If you focus on goals, you may achieve the goals, but that doesn’t guarantee you’ll grow. If you focus on growth, you will grow and achieve the goals every time.”
Design your growth. Don’t leave your future to chance.
