In this post, I’ll explain what High Agency is and why it’s the most important skill of the 21st century.
Some people wait for things to happen, and some people make things happen. The difference between the two is called HIGH AGENCY. And if you want to stop being a mere spectator of your life or career, this is the concept you need to internalize. High Agency people are drivers; Low Agency people are passengers in their own lives.
IT’S THE MINDSET THAT DOESN’T ACCEPT “NO” FOR AN ANSWER.
In essence, High Agency is the ABILITY TO FIND A PATH FORWARD WITHOUT WAITING FOR PERFECT CONDITIONS. It’s the antithesis of excuses and giving up.
- It’s not about blaming circumstances, the market, or a lack of resources.
- It’s simply pure action and unwavering faith in your ability to solve the problem.
While a person with Low Agency asks, “Can this be done?” Instead of waiting for an instruction manual, the person with High Agency asks, “How can I do this?” People with High Agency don’t let life happen to them; they shape it. This simple yet powerful reframing of the question changes everything.
THE WRIGHT BROTHERS EXAMPLE: TWO BICYCLE MAKERS AGAINST GLOBAL SKEPTICISM
Think of the Wright brothers. At the beginning of the 20th century, the idea of a human flying was considered a fantasy. In fact, the New York Times even wrote in 1903 that: “Man will not fly for a million years.” What was the response of the Wrights, two humble bicycle makers without great fortunes or university degrees? Four years after that headline, they were flying over Kitty Hawk beach.
That is High Agency in its purest form:
- They didn’t wait for permission.
- They started with what they had.
- They solved a problem that the whole world had labeled “impossible.”
IS IT TALENT, LUCK, OR ATTITUDE?
The difference between having a high or low level of Agency isn’t about innate talent or luck. It’s not a gift. It’s something far more crucial: it’s your response when someone tells you, “That can’t be done.”
When you encounter a wall, a roadblock, or a skeptic, pause. If your first instinct is to shrug and say, “They were right, it’s impossible,” you’re operating with Low Agency. If, on the other hand, your mind immediately starts searching for the loophole, the shortcut, or the tool that will allow you to jump over that wall, you’re demonstrating High Agency.
The world is full of talent, but it’s thirsty for people with High Agency. Stop waiting for someone to hand you the key; build your own lock. High Agency is the antidote to learning helplessness.
What’s that “impossible” thing your High Agency mind is going to start solving today?
And remember, “High Agency is about playing offense, not defense.”
